01Permission before collection
A future device-location feature should ask for permission, identify the purpose, and allow the user to decline and type or speak a location instead. A photo control should explain what to capture, why it is requested, where it goes, and that submission does not dispatch a truck.
02Stop before using the phone
Do not type, photograph, record, or share a location while driving or while standing in traffic, a loading path, near moving vehicles, between vehicles, downhill from a vehicle, near cables, fire, smoke, leaking fluid, high-voltage damage, or another unsafe position. Pull over and park in a safe location or have a passenger communicate.
03Use a precise but safe location
A useful dispatch location may include road and direction, nearest exit, cross street, landmark, lot or garage level, entrance, gate, stall, callback, and a dropped map pin. Device location can be inaccurate because of signal, permissions, indoor conditions, road geometry, stale sharing, or user movement; dispatch must verbally confirm the pickup.
04Capture only relevant vehicle and scene facts
When safe, broad vehicle position, visible damage, wheels, tires, low-clearance points, warning messages, garage clearance, surface, approach, and access restrictions may help qualify the request. Do not stage, move, touch, enter, or expose yourself to danger merely to create a better image.
05Remove unnecessary identifiers
Avoid faces, children, bystanders, plates when not needed, full VINs, registration, driver licenses, insurance cards, payment information, documents, keys, passwords, gate codes, home interiors, neighboring vehicles, computer screens, precise nonpublic addresses, and reflections that reveal unrelated information.
06Purpose, access, retention, and deletion
Location and photo information may be used to qualify, perform, document, bill, review, insure, or lawfully retain the request. Website-request information is ordinarily retained for up to one year unless an actual job, account, dispute, insurance matter, safety issue, or legal duty requires longer. A correction or deletion request may require identity verification and can be limited by those obligations.
