01Start with the manufacturer instructions
Find the model-year section for emergency towing, disabled-vehicle transport, recreational towing, tow eyes, neutral or transport modes, drive wheels, dollies, and approved transport position. Flat towing behind another vehicle is not the same as professional disabled-vehicle transport.
02Identify the drivetrain and drive wheels
Confirm front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, AWD, full-time 4WD, selectable 4WD, hybrid, or EV configuration. Neutral does not automatically disconnect every driveline component or make wheel-on-ground movement safe.
03Inspect the wheels, steering, and suspension
Locked, flat, missing, turned, or collision-damaged wheels; locked steering; applied electronic brakes; broken suspension; axle damage; and low-voltage failure can change both the loading method and which wheels may move.
04Compare carrier access and loading angle
A carrier can keep the transported vehicle's wheels off the road, but it still needs room, clearance, and a workable loading angle. Low cars, garages, alleys, steep ramps, curbs, ditches, soft ground, traffic, and overhead obstructions can complicate carrier use.
05Compare wheel-lift access and support
A wheel lift can work in tighter locations and lift one axle, but the remaining wheels, drivetrain, steering, distance, speed, damage, and manufacturer limits must permit the plan. Suitable dollies may be required to keep additional wheels off the road.
06Let the operator confirm the final method
Dispatch can qualify the likely equipment, but the operator must verify the actual vehicle and scene. A material difference may require another truck, dollies or skates, a recovery step, a revised estimate, scene protection, or another provider.
