Insurance Reimbursement for Towing and Roadside Help

Call live Kansas City dispatch at 816-588-8888 for current availability.

Start with a safe, accurate request

Towing or emergency-road-service coverage may pay or reimburse an eligible expense, but coverage is not automatic. The insurer or roadside plan—not the tow provider—decides whether the event, provider, amount, destination, and documentation satisfy the policy or membership terms.

Step-by-step

01

Identify the correct coverage source

Check the auto policy, roadside membership, vehicle-manufacturer plan, credit-card benefit, fleet program, warranty, or other program that may apply. A collision claim and optional towing coverage can involve different rules.

02

Ask whether the program must dispatch

Before calling an independent provider, ask whether the plan requires its own dispatch, a participating network, prior authorization, a claim number, a covered destination, or a specific service limit. Record the representative's name and instructions.

03

Confirm the limit and payment model

Ask whether the program pays the provider directly or reimburses you after payment, and whether a dollar, mileage, occurrence, destination, deductible, or service-type limit applies. Do not rely on the phrase ‘roadside coverage’ alone.

04

Give tow dispatch the program details

Tell Tommy's whether the insurer or plan issued an authorization or claim number, named a destination, requires an itemized receipt, or expects a specific billing process. Dispatch must still independently confirm that the request can be accepted.

05

Preserve and submit the records

Keep the itemized receipt or invoice, proof of payment, service date, vehicle, pickup, destination, breakdown or incident description, claim or membership number, authorization, and any requested photos. Submit copies by the program's approved method and keep the originals.

06

Appeal or complain through the correct channel

If reimbursement is denied or delayed, request the reason and applicable policy language in writing, use the insurer's review process, and contact the appropriate state insurance department when needed. Tommy's cannot change an insurer's coverage decision.

What to prepare

Policy or membership details

Company or program name, policy or membership number, covered vehicle, named insured or member, effective status, roadside phone number, and any mobile-app instructions.

Authorization details

Claim or service-request number, representative name, call time, approved provider or provider-choice rule, service and destination limits, and whether prior authorization is required.

Expense records

Itemized invoice, proof of payment, service date, pickup and destination, vehicle information, reason for service, and documents supporting any material change to the original estimate.

Privacy boundary

Give ordinary dispatch only the information needed to qualify the job. Do not send account passwords, full payment-card numbers, PINs, or unrelated identity records through the website email-preparation form.

Important limits

  • Tommy's cannot verify policy coverage, promise direct billing, guarantee reimbursement, interpret an insurance contract, or decide a claim.
  • Optional roadside or towing coverage can vary by company, state, policy, vehicle, event, provider, destination, and limit.
  • Using an independent provider before obtaining required authorization can affect reimbursement.
  • An insurer's payment or denial does not establish the tow provider's regulatory authority, equipment, availability, or service territory.

Questions drivers ask

Does ordinary auto insurance automatically include towing?

No universal assumption is safe. The NAIC describes towing or emergency-road-service coverage as a type of auto coverage, but your declarations, endorsements, exclusions, limits, and current policy control.

Do I pay first and request reimbursement later?

Some programs work that way, while others dispatch and pay a network provider or require prior approval. Ask the program and Tommy's dispatch before authorizing the service.

What receipt should I request?

Ask the insurer what it requires. Common records include the provider, service date, vehicle, pickup and destination, service description, itemized charges, total paid, and proof of payment.

What if the insurer denies reimbursement?

Ask for the reason and relevant policy term in writing, supply any missing documentation, use the insurer's appeal or review process, and contact the appropriate state insurance department if the dispute remains unresolved.
