Start with a safe, accurate request

Electric vehicles do not share one universal towing procedure. The exact model-year manufacturer instructions, low-voltage power, key availability, charging connection, wheel condition, high-voltage damage, access, and destination determine how the vehicle may be loaded and transported.

Identify the exact EV

Give the model year, manufacturer, model, trim or drive configuration, VIN when appropriate, and whether it is a battery-electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid. Similar-looking variants can use different drive units, tow eyes, modes, and restrictions.

Address immediate high-voltage danger

Call 911 for fire, smoke, hissing, popping, unusual heat, submerged or flood-damaged conditions, exposed high-voltage components, severe underbody damage, or a collision scene requiring emergency control. Do not touch orange cables, leaking material, or a damaged battery enclosure.

Report charge, power, key, and plug status

Tell dispatch the displayed state of charge if known, whether the vehicle has low-voltage power, whether a key or phone key is recognized, whether screens work, whether the charge connector is attached or locked, and whether the vehicle can enter the manufacturer's transport mode.

Describe every wheel and the underbody

Report locked, flat, missing, turned, or collision-damaged wheels; steering and suspension position; curb, parking stop, or ramp contact; underbody or battery-case impact; ground clearance; and whether the vehicle can roll without forcing a drive unit.

Use the approved loading and transport method

Check the manufacturer section for disabled-vehicle transport, tow mode, neutral, tow-eye installation, approved pulling direction, wheel movement, dollies or skates, and required transport position. A mode used for slow loading is not permission for road towing.

Confirm the EV-capable destination

Verify that the repair facility, dealer, charging location, residence, or storage destination accepts the vehicle in its actual condition and can handle keys, charging, after-hours delivery, immobilized wheels, high-voltage concerns, and unloading requirements.

What to prepare

Vehicle and energy state

Exact model and year, drive configuration, displayed range or charge, low-voltage power, warning messages, key recognition, charging status, plug connection, recent charging problem, and owner-manual transport section.

Damage and mobility

Collision, fire, flood, underbody strike, battery enclosure, leaking fluid, wheel and suspension condition, steering, brakes, locked systems, parking brake, and whether the vehicle rolls under the prescribed mode.

Loading access

Garage clearance and level, ramp angle, curb or parking stop, space in front and rear, tow-eye location, loading direction, soft ground, traffic exposure, and room for compatible equipment.

Destination readiness

EV-capable receiving contact, hours, acceptance confirmation, charger access if relevant, unloading position, key or phone handoff, after-hours process, and plan if the vehicle cannot be powered or moved normally.

Important limits

  • No single flatbed, wheel-lift, neutral, tow-mode, or wheel-on-ground statement is safe for every EV.
  • Do not unplug a locked connector, energize a damaged EV, force Neutral, attach to suspension or battery components, or crawl under the vehicle to locate a tow point.
  • Some manufacturer modes allow only slow, very short loading or repositioning; they are not general road-towing modes.
  • Current EV-compatible equipment, operator qualification, provider, destination, authority, and availability must be confirmed by live dispatch for the exact job.

Questions drivers ask

Does every EV need a flatbed?

Many manufacturers require a specified transport position, but the exact model-year manual and actual condition control. Some loading situations may also require skates, dollies, a tow eye, low-voltage power, or another method before the vehicle reaches a carrier.

Can an EV be towed after the battery reaches zero?

Possibly, but propulsion-battery depletion does not tell dispatch whether the low-voltage system, keys, parking brake, steering, charge connector, screens, wheels, or transport mode will operate. Report each condition separately.

Is Tow Mode the same as Neutral?

No universal equivalence exists. For example, Tesla's transporter instructions limit Tow Mode to slow, short loading or repositioning and require specific conditions. Use the exact manufacturer procedure.

What should I do after an EV collision?

Call 911 for injury, fire, smoke, unusual heat, exposed high-voltage components, fluid, serious underbody damage, or an unsafe roadway position. Assume damaged high-voltage components may remain energized until qualified responders evaluate the vehicle.
